2.The Red School, Svilengrad
It is the oldest school in Svilengrad. Founded in 1848 as a “secular sciences” school. It bears the name of one of its founders and head teacher – Hristo Popmarkov. Ivan Vazov was a head teacher at the school during the school year 1872/73.
3.The Old Bridge over the Maritsa River, Svilengrad
The Mustafa Pasha Bridge (or The Old Bridge) is a road bridge over the Maritsa River in Svilengrad, Bulgaria. It has a masonry stone construction made of 20 arches, the widest opening being 18 m. The bridge is 6 m wide and 300 m long in total. Built in 1529, the bridge was designed by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, and was part of a vakif complex that also included a caravanserai, mosque, bazaar and hamam. It was financed by the Sultan’s vizier Damad Mustafa Pasha. Later on the town Mustafa Pasha was founded around the complex, bearing presently the name Svilengrad. In the middle of the bridge a marble plaque was placed with an Ottoman inscription on it that reads: “This bridge was built, during the times when the greatest of the sultans – Sultan Suleiman Han, son of Selim Han, was a Caliph, by his vizier Mustafa Pasha – may God bless him for what he is creating, to be a continuation of his safety and security. And this [the building of the bridge] was his longest-lasting good deed during that year, on the date when a good deed became imperishable”.
